In Her Own Words: Q&A with Scotlyn

Q: What is the most important thing you’ve learned from working with horses since you started riding at age four?

A: Horses are peaceful and calm. I feel safe around horses. It’s also taught me to have patience. Horses don’t communicate the same way we do so when I’m not communicating with them clearly they don’t respond the way I need or want them to and that has helped me work through learning patience and managing my frustrations. If I get frustrated and the frustration keeps getting bigger the horse gets more confused. This is why it’s so important to have patience and be able to ask clearly for what you want or need. Learning these things with horse has helped me respond differently in other parts of life, like when I make mistakes, when I’m in hurry or when I’m not asking for what I want clearly.

Q: How did it feel to step onto the stage for your very first National American Miss pageant and hear your name called as 3rd runner-up?

A: I felt nervous on the inside at first but after the first optional competition I started feeling more confident in myself. The experience was so fun, I met so many supportive and kind girls and made new friends. I came away from the experience feeling the most confident about myself than what I’ve ever felt before. I also felt proud to have placed so well for my first time ever competing. I put a lot of time into practicing and preparing so it felt good to know that there was something positive that came from that. When I heard my name called for 3rd runner up, there were so many emotions all at once it’s hard to put into words. It was overwhelming, surprising, and exciting. I even had a little disappointment too because hearing my name also meant I wasn’t placing first. Overall though, I’d say what I felt the most was pride in myself and also blessed to have won a $120,000 college scholarship to Midland University.

Q: What is your favorite memory or moment from volunteering at Spirit Horse Ranch?

A: Helping Spirit Horse Ranch prepare for and host their Ribbon Cutting is one of my favorite times volunteering for Spirit Horse Ranch. The Ribbon Cutting was for their first year in service. It was great to see so many people from our community come out to learn about Spirit Horse Ranch and to support their organization. There was a lot of people and I loved sharing information about the horses.

Q: If you could design your ultimate dream outfit to walk down the runway at New York Fashion Week, what would it look like?

A: My outfit would have light blue colors because that’s my favorite color. It would probably have some type of skirt with a top, the skirt would have great movement when twirling because that’s something I love most about a great dress or skirt. It would also have a western feel so I could wear cowgirl boots with it.

Q: What inspired you to start making Blessing Bags, and why is helping others so important to you?

A: When I see people that don’t have as much as I have I feel sad for them so I want to do what I can to help them. Something that inspired me to do more came after a time I was leaving a restaurant with my family and I had food I hadn’t eaten from the restaurant. There was a guy who had a sign that said he was hungry. I gave him my food and he was so grateful for it, it was something so small but helped him. Blessing Bags are like that, they are a small way to help someone. The bags have important every day hygiene items in them for people who are homeless. My basketball team got together to make the blessing bags my first time. It was a fun way to be with my friends and to also be doing something kind and helpful for others. I think if we all did small things like that it would help make the world a better place.

Q: Between basketball, choir, kindness club, and pageants, how do you manage to balance all your favorite activities?

A: After school I take a short break but then I do the things that must get done first so then I can have time to go outside with my friends. My family also has a shared calendar so I can look at the calendar and I know what things I have each day. That helps me plan for and prepare for the things I have to do.

Q: What is your go-to song to sing when you’re practicing or just having fun creating videos on Coverstar?

A: My favorite song to sing is Forever 13 by Khloe Grace. It’s such a beautiful song that brings awareness to bullying and she really inspires me with her music. When I’m making Coverstar videos though I like to sing and make dance videos to Midnight Sun by Zara Larson. It’s a fun, upbeat tune and its the one I also like to use to practice my casual wear routine to for pageants.

Q: Receiving a school award for empathy is amazing—what does being kind and understanding mean to you in everyday life?

A: I think it means being kind and doing even simple or small things like respecting others, listening to others, being a good friend, showing kindness, and being excited for and celebrating others when they accomplish something.

Q: When you picture your future career working with horses and pursuing modeling, what are you most excited to achieve?

A: Right now I’m most excited about working toward winning a crown. I think winning a title will give me a platform to help and inspire others. I also think it will help lead to opportunities for me to get more into fashion modeling. It’s also exciting to think about my efforts, practice and hard work having the reward of recognition. When I think about my future of working with horses the thing I feel most excited about is the idea that someday I could have my own horse with my own barn.
